Advising Appointment Sign-Up

A student sitting in an academic advisors office

After you have submitted your orientation reservation and completed required pre-advising tasks, you can sign up for a virtual or in-person academic advising appointment. It is important that you as the student (not your parent or family member) submit the advising reservation. Appointments average about 45–60 minutes. During the appointment, an advisor or college representative will help you enroll in first-semester courses.

Fall 2024 Reservations

First-Year Students

  • Advising reservations open in MyRED May 2, 2024.
  • Appointments begin May 29.

Transfer Students

  • Advising reservations open in MyRED April 2, 2024.
  • Appointments begin April 22.

You do not need to complete orientation before being advised and enrolled. Similarly, you do not need to be advised and enrolled before your orientation. If you are a first-year student attending First-Year In-Person Orientation, your appointment cannot be between 8 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. CDT on your orientation date.

Scheduling an Appointment

You must submit your orientation reservation and complete all required pre-advising tasks in MyRED before you can access the steps below.

  1. Log in to MyRED, click the "Admissions" tab, "Undergraduate" and then "Academic Advising Appointment."
    • If the Math Placement Exam (MPE) is required for your major, your results must be received by the math department and uploaded to your student file before you can schedule your advising appointment. This process may take 1-2 business days after completing the exam. If the reservation form displays an "ineligible" message, your MPE results are being processed.
  2. On the first page of the reservation, confirm your major. If the major displayed is not your intended major, please submit the Change of Major request form in MyRED under the "Admissions" tab. Do not proceed with the reservation until you have received confirmation of the change.
  3. Select a date and time (CDT) for your academic advising appointment. You have the option to attend in-person or virtual (Zoom) advising. We strongly encourage in-person advising if it is available to you.
  4. By submitting a reservation, you are committing to the appointment. Please mark it in your calendar. Your advisor prepares for the appointment in advance and plans for you on the date and time you select.
  5. Complete remaining fields on the reservation and submit.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Once you’ve scheduled your appointment, keep the following information in mind:

  • For virtual advising, please be in a private, quiet location (if possible) where you can focus on your appointment. Please use a computer for the best screen-sharing experience. We recommend installing Zoom prior to your appointment.
  • For in-person advising, plan to arrive to campus 20–30 minutes before your appointment to ensure you have time to park, walk and find your advising location.
  • Your academic college will email you 1–2 business days before your appointment to provide the name of your advisor and appointment access instructions (virtual advising) or office directions (in-person advising). You do not need to contact your advisor prior to your appointment.

Advising and Enrollment

During your 45–60-minute appointment, you and your advisor get to know each other, discuss degree requirements, review incoming credit (if applicable), identify course options and use the Enrollment Scheduler in MyRED to build your first-semester class schedule.
