Advising Appointment Sign-Up

A student sitting in an academic advisors office

After you submit your orientation reservation and complete the required pre-advising tasks in MyRED, you can schedule a virtual or in-person academic advising appointment. Students—not parents or family members—must submit the advising reservation.

Advising appointments typically last 45–60 minutes. During your appointment, an advisor or college representative will help you enroll in your first-semester courses.

You do not need to complete orientation before being advised and enrolled, and you do not need to be advised and enrolled before attending orientation.

Visit the advising page for reservation details and appointment dates for your starting term.

Scheduling an Appointment

  1. Log in to MyRED, click the "Admissions" tab, "Undergraduate" and then "Academic Advising Appointment."
    • If the Math Placement Exam (MPE) is required for your major, your results must be received by the math department and uploaded to your student file before you can schedule your advising appointment. This process may take 1-2 business days after completing the exam. If the reservation form displays an "ineligible" message, your MPE results are being processed.
  2. Confirm your major on the first page of the reservation. If the major displayed is not your intended major, submit the Change of Major request form in MyRED under the "Admissions" tab. Do not proceed with the reservation until you have received confirmation of the change.
  3. Select a date and time (CDT) for your academic advising appointment. Appointment availability varies by admit college and major, and appointments fill on a first-come, first-served basis.

You have the option to attend in-person or virtual (Zoom) advising. We strongly encourage in-person advising if it is available to you.
  4. Complete remaining fields on the reservation and submit.

By submitting a reservation, you are committing to the appointment. Please mark it in your calendar. Your advisor prepares for the appointment in advance and plans for you on the date and time you select.

Rescheduling Advising Appointments

Reservations cannot be cancelled or rescheduled in MyRED. We strongly encourage you to keep the advising date and time you initially selected on your reservation. Appointments fill quickly, and we can’t guarantee availability on your desired date. If you decide to change your appointment, the best way to do so is by calling us at 402-472-4646. Availability changes by the minute, so calling us enables our team to provide you with the most up-to-date options for a new appointment.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Once you’ve scheduled your appointment, keep the following information in mind:

  • For virtual advising, please be in a private, quiet location (if possible) where you can focus on your appointment. Please use a computer for the best screen-sharing experience. We recommend installing Zoom prior to your appointment.
  • For in-person advising, plan to arrive to campus 20–30 minutes before your appointment to ensure you have time to park, walk and find your advising location.
  • Your academic college will email you 1–2 business days before your appointment to provide the name of your advisor and appointment access instructions (virtual advising) or office directions (in-person advising). You do not need to contact your advisor prior to your appointment.

Advising and Enrollment

During your 45–60-minute appointment, you and your advisor get to know each other, discuss degree requirements, review incoming credit (if applicable), identify course options and use MyRED to build your first-semester class schedule.
