Modern Language Placement Exam

Languages at UNL

UNL offers language placement tests in Spanish, French and German. Not every college or major requires you to take a Modern Language Exam. Language placement besides Spanish, French and German will be assessed by the Department of Modern Languages or the Department of Classics and Religious Studies. Other languages UNL offers include Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Latin, Japanese, Russian, Czech, Classical Greek, and Omaha (Native American).

Should I Take the Exam?

Students in the following colleges/majors are REQUIRED to complete a foreign language sequence beyond the 2 years required in high school as part of their degree:

  • College of Arts & Sciences (all majors)
  • College of Journalism and Mass Communications (all majors)
  • Hixson-Lied College of Fine & Performing Arts (Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees)
  • College of Business (International Business majors)

You will be directed to log into MYRED to take the exam.

It is encouraged.

Students in the following colleges are NOT REQUIRED to complete foreign language sequence as part of their degree, but are highly encouraged to continue or pursue a language:

  • College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources
  • College of Architecture
  • College of Business Administration
  • College of Education and Human Sciences
  • College of Engineering
  • Hixson-Lied College of Fine & Performing Arts (Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Music Education degrees). Students who are unsure of their degree should take the Modern Language Placement Exam.

*UNDECIDED STUDENTS ADMITTED TO THE EXPLORATORY AND PRE-PROFESSIONAL ADVISING CENTER (EXPLORE CENTER) ARE ENCOURAGED TO TAKE THE MODERN LANGUAGE PLACEMENT EXAM EVEN THOUGH THEIR COLLEGE/MAJOR IS CURRENTLY UNDECIDED.

Please Note: Admission to UNL requires 2 years of a single foreign language in high school. However, some colleges and majors at UNL require further language study for degree requirements.
